Hadassah is a Jewish women's Zionist organization noted for its hospitals in Jerusalem and its contributions to public health.
With the encouragement of Henrietta Szold, in 1917, Rose Rinder spearheaded the formation of a local San Francisco chapter.
The group started with sewing and study circles: the Sewing and Supply Committee provided clothing for soldiers who were fighting
in World War I, as well as medical and general supplies for Palestinian settlements; and the Study Circle introduced its members
to the ideals of Zionism through books and a series of speakers who shared their first-hand knowledge of Palestinian affairs.
In 1918, the San Francisco chapter temporarily dissolved to unite with the district Zionist Organization of America.
